In addition to being one of the largest cities in Oman, Nizwa is also the capital of Oman Proper. Approximately two hours west of Muscat, it has an estimated population of 70,000. It is also one of the oldest cities in the country. In its prime, Nizwa was the epicenter of business, education and religion. Today, it is commonly used as a meeting location for the prominent religious figureheads in Islam. A diverse economy, which employs many different business sectors, had produced a thriving city. Nizwa is world renowned for the dates and other vegetation that its numerous plantations produce annually.

Nizwa is fraught with many attractions that draw thousands of tourists and visitors each year. The three most well known of these attractions are Nizwa Fort, the Souq, and Falaj Daris. In a continued effort to modernize his country, the current ruler of Oman, Sultan Quaboos, commissioned the renovations of the Jama (a grand mosque) and the Souq. Materials that were used in the original construction of these locales were used in the restorations. Nizwa has won many awards and other forms of recognition from other Muslim countries for its cleanliness and its continued adherence to its Muslim roots.

Nizwa Fort was constructed in the 1650's by the Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi. It is arguably the most visited attraction within the country of Oman. This site was the seat of government during the periods when the Imamas and Walis were ruling the country. The whole fort has been built over an underground river. Although its construction took almost twelve years to complete, the fort serves for the Omani people as a symbol of strength and as a reminder of their turbulent history. The fort was the city's primary line of defense against marauding tribes who wished to plunder the region's natural wealth.

The Nizwa Souq is another popular attraction that this city offers to tourists. The city is already renowned for its agricultural produce, and the Souq serves as the perfect showcase for its wares. Besides the Muttrah, this is the most important market in Oman. A visitor can find everything they could imagine here from fish to fruit to gold to other handicrafts. The city is also famous for its ability to produce high quality works of silver jewelry. The Omani people are also experts when it comes to crafting copper ware. Each Friday, the market hosts a livestock market. Cows, goats, and sheep are auctioned and sold to the highest bidders.

Among the other attractions of Nizwa are Nizwa University and Nizwa College of Technology. Both of these institutes are thought to be among the best in the country. Also, a short jaunt from the center of Nizwa is an old village called Tanuf. It is famous for its seasonal waterfalls. These waterfalls are most prominent during the rainy season, and consequently, it becomes a popular picnic spot during this season. Regardless of where you go in Nizwa, there is a variety of activities and sights for you to partake in. Steeped in natural beauty and history, it is a beautiful city.
